Begin with the shape of the game
Before choosing a move, look at the whole board. Is the game mainly a race, or do the players still have contact? A move that helps in a race may be risky when opposing checkers can still hit.
Identify immediate threats
Notice exposed checkers, blocked landing points and vulnerable areas. Consider what your opponent could achieve on the next roll. This helps you compare a safe move with an ambitious one.
Think about structure
Connected points and flexible checkers give you useful choices on future turns. A position is more than the move available now: it also includes the options you are creating for later rolls.
Explain your choice
Describe the main reason for a move in one sentence. If you cannot explain it, compare the alternatives again. Practicing this habit makes later reviews clearer and more useful.
